My Post Went Viral on TikTok. Here’s What I learned.
No matter how much planning goes into a social media post, we all hope once we hit publish that it hits our intended audience. After all, that is the hope with curating a community on our social media pages - we educate, entertain and encourage discussion. So what happens when the post goes viral?
As a boy mom, I was increasingly frustrated shopping for clothes for my toddler. Compared to the girl’s section, it was one singular rack mixed with pajamas and day clothes. His size was intertwined with the older toddler mix and that was it. Frustrated, I took to TikTok here to express my annoyance. I quickly learned my feelings were not alone.
With over 200,000 views, it was quickly snowballing into my most watched post. My page is modest with only 100 actual followers. That is quite the contrast! As the algorithm picked up more and more views, it was shared and shown on the FYP (For You Page) exponentially. By using TikTok’s data analytics feature (available on every creator’s posts), I took a deeper dive. 98% of my viewers were female and between the ages of 25-34. I quickly learned that “mom” content was a favorable subject for me, especially given that I can relate the most.
I would not have learned this if it hadn’t been for the plenty of other videos I tried to make. Experimenting with content - I have taken days to make Toronto tourism videos, or transition fashion videos or a basic video vlog - but finding this niche should definitely help me continue to get views. As of this post, my second most viewed video is a jab at the stark contrast between our motherhood days and college days.
Using what I have learned, I will continue to post about my day to day content but with a concentration on motherhood since that seems to resonate the most with my audience for now.
What else have you learned for your business by experimenting with content? Let’s talk.
