What is Threads? A recap.

Mark Zuckerberg did what he does best last week - rivalry. Last week, Meta launched Threads, a direct rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter. The word-based app was immediately dubbed a direct competitor to Twitter with its text-focused and conversation based newsfeed. It quickly became one of most downloaded apps of the week.

The lowdown:

  • Like Twitter, users are limited in text. You can write a 500 character thread using GIFS, videos, links and more.

  • As of now, you cannot delete the app without also deleing your Instagram account. Threads uses your Instagram bio and data to help find your followers and friends, content topics and more.

  • Your feed will be a mix of suggested accounts, designated following pages and videos/GIFs/ and polls. A mix-up!

  • Thread users are able to share their Threads directly to their Instagram story.

  • Twitter is threatening to sue Meta Platforms for an alleged violation of trade secrets and other confidential information in building the app.

  • As of now, there is no desktop version. Currently, there are no ads on the platform (yet).

Should you join Threads? Yes! While you are still working through content strategy as as business, it is important to experiment. I say “why not?” Get in and use Threads - it is light-heartened, fun and easy… for now. Get there before the bots and politics ruin it for everyone!
